About the Race
The 1-181 Infantry Battalion (Powderhorn) of the Massachusetts Army National Guard will be hosting its first annual 5K on September 24, 2016 in Devens MA. The 1-181 Infantry traces its lineage back to 1636 at the “Salem Muster” where, along with other Massachusetts units, it became known as “The Nation’s First.” Since then, the 1-181 Infantry has fought in every major conflict from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq and Afghanistan Campaigns in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Currently, the Battalion is comprised of four line companies located throughout the state and a headquarters company located in Worcester.
100% of all proceeds from this race will be contributed to the “Powderhorn Fund,” which is used for morale and welfare purposes. Our goal is to provide at least one Powderhorn Soldier and one family member a college scholarship to be awarded in January. You can help us achieve this worthy goal simply by registering and taking part in this unique and historic 5k run. Your registration fee includes, a numbered bib, chipped professional timekeeping, professional photographs online, and a t-shirt. Prizes will be presented for age and gender categories as well as separate Soldiers categories. T-shirts will only be available to those runners who register before August 23rd. I know that running [volunteering for] a road race is potentially hazardous activity, which could cause injury or death. I will not enter and participate unless I am medically able and properly trained, and by my signature, I certify that I am medically able to perform this event, and am in good health, and I am properly trained. I assume all risks associated with running in this event, including but no limited to: falls, contact with other participants, the effects of the weather, including high heat and/or humidity, traffic and the conditions of the road I understand that bicycles, skateboards, roller skates or roller blades, and animals, are not allowed in the race and I will abide by all race rules. Having read this waiver and knowing these facts and inconsideration of your accepting my entry, I, for myself and anyone entitled to act on my behalf, waive and release the “Nation’s First” 5K, the town of Devens, and all event sponsors, their representatives and successors from all claims or liabilities of any kind arising out of my participation in this event, even though that liability may arise out of negligence or carelessness on the part of the persons named in this waiver. I grant permission to all of the foregoing to use my photographs, motion pictures, recordings or any other record of this event for any legitimate purpose.
